Spinnaker Tower Has Opened
The Spinnaker Tower, the wonderful structure overlooking Portsmouth Harbour, has finally opened to the public.
Designed in the form of two sweeping arcs creating a spinnaker sail, the Spinnaker Tower stands at the edge of the Gunwharf Quays shopping development.
The tower is higher than both Blackpool Tower and the London Eye. There are three viewing levels, including one on the crow’s nest level, in the open air. There are two lifts – one inside, one outside, and there is also a bar and café.
The last time I took a Coach Trip to Portsmouth, in May 2004, the tower was virtually complete, but of course not yet open.
From the vantage point on the top of Portsdown Hill, where I show groups Portsmouth and the Solent spread out like a giant map, and point out lots of places of interest, the Spinnaker Tower can be clearly seen.
