Illuminating Dress
I went to a fascinating talk recently entitled "Illuminating Dress".
The talk was organised by Leicester City Libraries, and held at the Central Lending Library, as part of a series aimed at over-55s.
The speaker was Dr. Margaret Scott, and the subject was the styles of dress depicted in contemporary illustrations from the mediaeval period.
She pointed out that an illustration is sometimes taken from a library and plonked into the text without any thought, or knowledge, as to whether it is really suitable. Just because it is old, does not necessary mean that it is suitable.
Margaret told us of the heraldic emblems that gave clues as to a person`s identity, as well as colours and styles which gave an idea of that person`s station in life.
What a fascinating talk!
