Essex Familiarisation Day
I recently spent a day in Essex, on a familiarisation day organised by Carol Jolly of Visit Essex.
Essex is my home county, but although I know it more than most, there are parts that I am not familiar with.
I travelled by train to Witham, where a coach had been arranged, to take us to our first destination, the magnificent Layer Marney Tower, the tallest Tudor gatehouse in England.
The next stop was Thorpe-le-Soken, where we were shown around the luxurious hotel and spa.
Then it was on to the historic seaport of Harwich, for a visit to Harwich Redoubt, constructed for defensive purposes during the Napoleonic Wars.
Dedham was our destination for lunch, to which we were treated by the Marlborough Head, after which we had a short Guided Walk around this exquisite little town where John Constable went to school.
Staying in Dedham, we then visited Castle House, Sir Alfred Munnings Art Museum in his former home and studio.
Another excellent day.
