A Lovely Morning around Watling Street
Did you miss the Soar Valley Tour?
This was one of my morning Coach Trips. These happen several times a year, with the coach leaving St. Margarets Bus Station in Leicester at 9.30am and getting back about 2pm.
We started the tour with a short ride along one of the most famous of Roman roads, the Fosse Way, which ran through Leicester, and then rode along the even more famous Watling Street down into Northamptonshire.
On these trips I always make sure that the coffee stop, halfway round, is somewhere with a bit of added interest. This time we stopped at the Old Dairy Farm Centre at Upper Stowe, which not only has a nice tearoom but also has quite a selection of craft shops.
Then on the way back I was able to show the group one of the Eleanor Crosses. Edward I set these up where his wife Eleanor’s body rested on its way to burial. There are only three left. This one is at Hardingstone on the outskirts of Northampton. Quite a few passengers got off and had a closer look at this amazing monument which is several hundred years old.
The next morning trip is the Secret Leicestershire Tour, looking at things you wouldn’t normally see, such as deserted villages, wayside crosses and holy wells.
See you for that?
